Woof’s Play & Stay
Animal Care Facility
The new Woof’s Play & Stay is a 10,000 square foot doggy daycare, grooming, and boarding facility. Originally a spec project inside an RDB spec building, Woof’s decided to call the newly built space home and, after a quick new tenant finish that completed in May 2011, the pet care facility opened its doors for business in Olathe.
Challenges
- Implementing adequate measures to control noise and odor produced by large numbers of animals
- Ensuring waste could be disposed of in a healthy manner
- Integrating the new facility’s design elements with the approved Parkside Business Center standards
- High-tech “extras” to help Woof’s engender superior levels of trust among its discerning clientele
Strategies
- As the project’s architect and general contractor, RDB was able to design and implement comprehensive exhaust systems and individual dog units to minimize excessive noise and odors
- To address health concerns associated with animal waste disposal, RDB proposed a state-of-the art dog run with artificial turf over a rock and sand base to allow urine to pass through easily
- RDB determined appropriate color and material schemes to match Parkside Business Center requirements
- High-tech video capabilities were carefully worked into the design
Results
- Woof’s has a boarding area that’s well-ventilated with sophisticated mechanical exhaust systems and overhead glass doors that facilitate the movement of air as well as several “private” indoor rooms for pets to be alone
- The outdoor dog run allows for easy liquid run-off and removal of solid materials
- The new facility incorporates eco-oriented insulation systems, window units, mechanical equipment, and other green building products while adhering to the Business Center’s standards
- Woof’s is a first-class facility with rooms that can be monitored by video from a client’s home computer, themed rooms for dogs’ entertainment, and screens that allows dogs to watch TV
